Nikon Z9 to Shoot 8K Video Up to 60fps More Efficiently with a New RAW Codec

Even though the flagship Nikon Z9 was capable of capturing internal 8K video from the very beginning, it’s worth mentioning that now there’s a new high-efficiency RAW recording codec developed by intoPIX which has been successfully integrated into the camera recently.

According to the developer, the proprietary TicoRAW technology allows for low processing and fast transfer speeds of up to 8K at 60 frames per second in RAW. In a nutshell, the Nikon Z9 will be capable of capturing highly efficient RAW files that do not compromise image integrity by preserving the full power of the image sensor while reducing bandwidth, storage needs, and transfer times.

According to intoPIX, TicoRAW is capable of supporting a huge number of resolutions, from 1080p Full HD through 20K RAW. Meanwhile, the Nikon Z9  is capable of recording 4K UHD at up to 120 with no cropping.

Internal recording with 10-bit color and 4:2:2 sampling is also possible in the ProRes 422 HQ and H.265 codecs, and H.264 and 4:2:0 color can be used depending on your workflow needs.

The camera boasts a newly developed 45.7MP BSI stacked CMOS sensor which offers fast readout speeds and helps to reduce rolling shutter while providing a native ISO 64-25600 range, that can be expanded to ISO 32-102400.

Additionally, high-resolution frame grabs can be recorded in-camera from 8K and 4K videos, for producing 33MP or 11MP stills, respectively. The Z9 also features Nikon’s original NLog and HLG picture profiles that were both introduced with the original Z6 and Z7 cameras.
